As we head into the holiday season, I want to talk about something that will take you further than any PR: your academics.
Build the Habits Now
The spring season gets hectic fast—meets every weekend, practices ramping up, travel, and fatigue. If you wait until March to figure out your study routine, you’re already behind. Start building those good habits now, in the off-season, so they’re automatic when things get crazy.
Find Your Time—It’s There
“I don’t have time” isn’t going to cut it. Successful student-athletes don’t find time; they make time:
After school, before practice: That 30-45 minutes can knock out homework or review notes
In the car: Waiting for practice to start? Review flashcards, read a chapter, or get a head start on assignments
Between events at meets: Bring your backpack. Downtime is study time.
The athletes who succeed academically aren’t working longer—they’re working smarter with the pockets of time everyone else wastes.
The Real Talk
Here’s what I need you to understand: Your grades will get you farther than your times ever will.
I love watching you compete. I celebrate every PR, every medal, every breakthrough race. But the truth is, there are thousands of fast kids across the country. What separates those who run in college—or get into their dream schools—from those who don’t? It’s not always the fastest kids. It’s the kids with the complete package.
Ask any college about athletes they can admit: scholarships go to students who can stay eligible. And the doors that a strong GPA opens? They stay open long after your running career ends.
The Bottom Line
Track teaches discipline, time management, and work ethic. Prove you can apply those lessons where it matters most—in the classroom. Your future self will thank you.
Let’s make this our best season yet—on the track AND in school.
